Importing into India

What applies at the border, and who deals with it

Four things decide whether goods clear into India smoothly. Each one is checked by us before the cargo moves.

  • Importer Exporter Code (IEC): required by the DGFT for any import into India unless an exemption applies. We arrange the import through our own infrastructure.
  • BIS registration: electronics and IT goods under the Compulsory Registration Scheme, mobile phones among them, must carry the BIS Standard Mark with their registration number. We check your products against it before they ship.
  • Duties and taxes: Basic Customs Duty, the Social Welfare Surcharge on it and IGST on the import, all inside the DDP price once the goods are classified.
  • Anti-dumping duty: imposed on specific goods from specific countries by customs notification. We check whether yours are affected before we quote.

What is not included

The exclusions, in writing, before you ask

So there are no surprises on the invoice, these sit outside the price.

  • Rural and island delivery addresses, quoted separately rather than hidden in the price.
  • Products we have not checked for admissibility yet. New items get checked before they ship.
  • Batteries, liquids and similar goods without their documentation up front.

Questions

What importers in India ask us first

Delivered Duty Paid means the price covers everything up to and including delivery at the destination address, with the import duty and taxes already paid. In practice that is consolidation in China, export formalities, the air freight, Indian customs clearance, the duty and taxes, handling at destination and the last mile. There is no separate customs bill and no duty invoice afterwards. What you do on arrival is receive the goods.

7 to 10 days by air and 20 to 25 by sea, door to door, measured from the cargo being ready in China to delivery at the final address anywhere in India. The variable is rarely the flight or the sailing. It is how quickly the documentation, the classification and any certification are right, which is why we ask about those first.

A courier prices every parcel separately and rounds each one up to the next weight band, so on every parcel you pay the gap between the real weight and the rounded weight. We consolidate your orders into bulk cartons and the shipment is charged on gross weight as one movement. No rounding on each piece, no minimum per piece.

No, and it is the reason consolidation exists. Your suppliers deliver into our warehouse in China and the cargo waits there until the last one arrives, then it ships as one movement charged on gross weight. If you would rather we collected from your suppliers instead of them delivering to us, we can do that too.

We arrange it. Importing into India needs an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) issued by the DGFT, unless an exemption applies, and the right registrations behind it. We set each shipment up through our own contacts and infrastructure in India so it clears under the arrangement that fits your business, and we tell you before the cargo moves what, if anything, we need from you.

Many electronics and IT goods, mobile phones among them, fall under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme: they cannot be imported into India unless they carry the BIS Standard Mark with the manufacturer's registration number. Other goods have their own approvals. We check each new product against the current lists before it ships, not at the airport, and if a registration is missing we tell you what it takes rather than letting the cargo find out at customs.

Every movement sits on Velonex Control Tower, our own platform, from the goods arriving at our warehouse in China through clearance to the final delivery. You see the same file we see rather than waiting for somebody to forward you a status by email, and you keep one point of contact for anything the screen does not answer.

Indian customs charges Basic Customs Duty on the tariff line of your goods, a Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, and IGST on the import. Some goods from some origins also carry anti-dumping duty. All of it is inside the DDP price: we classify the goods with you first, so the number you agree is the number you pay.

The answer depends on the commodity rather than on a general rule. Batteries, liquids and anything similar need their documentation up front, not at the warehouse. Tell us what it is early and you get a straight yes or no.
