Shipping guide · Europe
Shipping from China and Hong Kong to Sweden
Sweden is the largest Nordic market and its freight system is built around one port. Gothenburg handles the majority of Swedish container volume and is the only Scandinavian port with regular direct calls from Asia.
- Customs union
- European Union, common tariff and common customs code
- Customs authority
- Tullverket, Swedish Customs
- Import VAT
- Moms, standard rate 25 percent
- VAT handling
- Swedish VAT registered importers report import VAT to the Tax Agency on the return
- Inland network
- Gothenburg operates rail shuttles to inland terminals nationwide
- Main entry points
- Gothenburg by sea, Stockholm Arlanda by air
What makes Gothenburg unusual is its rail network. The port runs dedicated rail shuttles to inland terminals across the country, so a container discharged there can reach Stockholm, Malmo or the far north without a long road haul. For a country this size, that system is the difference between workable and prohibitive inland costs.
Sweden is long. The distance from the south to the north is greater than most importers expect, and cargo destined beyond Stockholm needs that leg planned as a real cost rather than an afterthought.
Swedish customs is efficient, digital and unusually transparent, and English is used comfortably throughout. The friction in Swedish imports is rarely administrative; it is distance, seasonality and the 25 percent VAT rate.

Where cargo lands
Main freight and distribution centres
Stockholm
The largest market and the main air gateway, with distribution capacity concentrated to the south and west of the city.
Gothenburg
The port city and the logistics capital, with the deepest concentration of forwarding, warehousing and customs expertise.
Malmo
The southern gateway, joined to Copenhagen by bridge and functioning as one logistics area with it.
Jonkoping
Centrally placed in the south, a natural national distribution point and home to a large share of Swedish warehousing.
Lulea and the north
Industrial and mining region with major projects underway and correspondingly heavy equipment import needs.
Sea freight
Ports of entry and what they mean for your cargo
Gothenburg
The largest port in Scandinavia and the only one with regular direct Asian calls, with rail shuttles reaching inland terminals across Sweden.
Helsingborg
Second container port in the south, useful for the Skane region and as an alternative when Gothenburg is congested.
Stockholm Norvik
A modern container terminal serving the capital region directly, reducing the road leg from the west coast.
Gavle and Lulea
Northern ports handling industrial, forestry and project cargo, with ice conditions affecting winter operations.
The Gothenburg rail shuttle system is the single most useful thing to understand about Swedish logistics. For inland destinations it usually beats road on cost, emissions and predictability.
Stockholm Norvik gives the capital region a direct maritime option, which is worth comparing against Gothenburg plus rail depending on the final delivery point.
Northern ports face winter ice conditions. For cargo heading to the far north, the season is part of the routing decision, not a footnote.
Air freight
Airports and when air is the right answer
Stockholm Arlanda (ARN)
The main air cargo gateway, with full customs facilities and the widest connectivity in the country.
Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT)
Serves the west, convenient when the cargo is destined to the Gothenburg industrial region.
Malmo (MMX) and Copenhagen (CPH)
For southern Sweden, Copenhagen is frequently the better air gateway despite being in another country.
Air freight from Asia into Sweden usually routes via a larger European hub, so the realistic transit is a little longer than into Frankfurt or Amsterdam.
For southern Sweden, using Copenhagen and trucking across the bridge is standard practice and often faster than routing through Stockholm.
Indicative transit times
How long the movement usually takes
- Sea FCL, South China to GothenburgAround 33 to 43 days port to portDirect calls exist, though many services still feed via a larger northern European hub.
- Onward rail shuttle from GothenburgAround 1 to 2 days to inland terminalsFrequent, competitively priced and more predictable than long distance road.
- Sea LCL, South China to SwedenAround 40 to 52 days door to doorConsolidation via a larger hub adds handling time at both ends.
- Air freight, Hong Kong or South China to StockholmAround 5 to 9 days door to doorUsually one stop via a European hub, including handling and clearance.
These ranges are indicative and exist to help you plan. Real transit time depends on the service, the season, the routing and the clearance itself, and we confirm it per shipment rather than publish it as a promise.
Customs
How clearance into Sweden actually works
The competent authority is Tullverket, Swedish Customs.
Sweden applies the EU Common Customs Tariff, so duty follows the HS classification of the goods.
Import VAT works differently in Sweden than in most member states: for VAT registered companies it is reported to the Swedish Tax Agency on the periodic VAT return rather than paid to customs at the border. The 25 percent therefore does not become a cash outlay for a registered business.
That split between Tullverket for duty and the Tax Agency for import VAT is administratively unusual, and it is a common source of confusion for companies importing into Sweden for the first time.
An EORI number is required. A company with no EU establishment needs an Importer of Record arrangement or an indirect representative.
Swedish customs publishes guidance clearly and in English, and is generally approachable. Getting the classification and the declarant arrangement right at the start is straightforward here if it is done deliberately.
Documentation
What you need to have ready
Commercial invoice
Value, terms and clear description, consistent with the transport document.
Packing list
Piece counts, weights and dimensions per package.
Bill of Lading or Air Waybill
The transport contract and the release instrument.
EORI number
Required for any operator dealing with EU customs.
Swedish VAT registration
What allows import VAT to be handled on the return rather than paid at the border.
Certificate of origin
Where preferential duty treatment is being claimed.
CE conformity documentation
For electronics, machinery, toys, lighting and construction products.
Product specific certificates
Phytosanitary, veterinary, CITES or dangerous goods documentation as applicable.
Controlled and restricted goods
What gets stopped, and why
- Chemicals and treated articles face strict Swedish enforcement, with national attention to substances in consumer goods on top of the EU REACH framework.
- Products aimed at children are checked seriously for safety and chemical content.
- Food, plants and animal origin products must enter through an approved border control post with the corresponding certification.
- Alcohol is subject to the Swedish retail monopoly and its own excise regime, which is a commercial as well as a customs consideration.
- Dual use goods and export controlled technology require licences.
- Wood packaging must comply with ISPM 15 and carry the mark.
Working with Velonex
What clients usually bring us in for on this lane
- Cargo for inland and northern destinations, where using the Gothenburg rail shuttles rather than long distance road changes the cost structure entirely.
- Heavy equipment and project cargo for the northern industrial projects, where winter conditions and port ice have to be planned around.
- Companies serving both Denmark and southern Sweden as one area, where Copenhagen is often the better gateway even for Swedish deliveries.
- Consumer goods and products for children, where Swedish chemical and safety enforcement is stricter than the EU baseline suggests.
- First-time importers who need the unusual Swedish split between customs duty and import VAT explained before it causes a problem.
