The Arctic route: a 20 day China to Europe option, for a few weeks a year

The Northern Sea Route, along the Russian Arctic coast, has been used for a small number of container sailings between China and northern Europe. As CNN has reported, the routing cuts the distance enough to put Ningbo-Zhoushan to Europe at roughly 20 to 22 days, against the six weeks a Suez routing normally takes, with sailings concentrated between mid August and late September while the ice permits.

Twenty days by sea sits in an interesting gap. It is roughly half the ocean transit and a fraction of the air freight cost, which is exactly the space where a lot of mid value cargo lives: furniture, fit out materials, seasonal retail stock, machinery that is needed but not needed tomorrow.

The catch is that the window is the product. Sailings are few, the season is short, and there is no fallback service on the same routing if a vessel is missed or the booking rolls. Insurance, ice class requirements and the political sensitivity of the corridor all add friction that a standard Suez or Cape sailing does not carry.

Then there is the environmental question, which for a growing number of European buyers is a commercial question. Shipping through the Arctic attracts scrutiny that a conventional routing does not, and cargo owners who report on their supply chain emissions and their supply chain choices should expect to be asked about it.
