Panama Canal under pressure: what a million dollar transit slot tells you
Transit slots auctioned at an average of US$1.1 million in August, sixteen times a year earlier, and the draft limit is tightening. Less cargo per vessel, and a cost that lands somewhere.

Auction prices for Panama Canal transit slots averaged around US$1.1 million during August 2026, roughly sixteen times the level of a year earlier, according to Financial Times reporting. At the same time the maximum permitted Neopanamax draft has been coming down.
The two numbers describe the same problem from different ends. A lower draft limit means a vessel cannot load to its full capacity, so each transit carries less cargo. A slot auction at over a million dollars means each of those reduced transits costs far more to secure. Fewer boxes, higher fixed cost per crossing.
That cost does not stay with the carrier. It arrives as a surcharge, as a blanked sailing, as a longer routing around the Cape, or as a service that quietly switches to a US West Coast discharge with an intermodal leg across the continent. Any of those changes the transit time and the landed cost of a shipment that was quoted weeks earlier.
For a shipper moving Asia to US East Coast cargo, the practical exposure is not the canal itself. It is that the routing behind a quoted transit time may no longer be the routing that gets used, and nobody mentions it until the cargo is late.
What it means for your cargo
The part that changes a decision
Ask which routing a transit time assumes
A 30 day quote via Panama and a 30 day quote via a West Coast discharge and rail are not the same shipment. They fail differently, and they cost differently when they fail.
Surcharges belong in the comparison, not in the invoice
Canal related surcharges move quickly. A rate that excludes them is not cheaper, it is just less complete, and the difference shows up after the cargo has sailed.
Build the buffer where it is cheap
Two extra weeks of stock on a slow moving line costs far less than air freighting the same goods because a sailing was blanked. The time to decide that is at the purchase order, not at the port.
