China to Europe air freight rates fall to their lowest in months
Rates from China to Milan, Frankfurt and Liège fell more than 20 percent. A soft window like this is worth using, but only if the cargo is ready to move when it opens.
Air freight rates out of China into the main European gateways dropped to their lowest level in months during July 2026. Reporting by BSI Freight put Milan down 26 percent, Frankfurt down 23 percent and Liège down 22 percent against the preceding period.
Softness on this lane is usually a capacity story rather than a demand story. Passenger flights returning to schedule put belly capacity back into the market, and belly capacity is priced to fill rather than priced to profit. That is why a fall can be steep and short at the same time.
The part worth planning around is the second half of that sentence. Rates on the China to Europe lane firm up as Q4 approaches, when retail replenishment, consumer electronics launches and pre holiday stock all compete for the same aircraft. A window that is open in July is not a rate you can assume in October.

Falls are quoted on the airport to airport leg. Terminal handling, customs clearance, import VAT deferment and final delivery do not fall with it, and they are where a cheap quote quietly becomes an expensive one.
If Q4 matters, book the capacity, not the price
On a lane that tightens seasonally, the risk is not paying more per kilo. It is having no space at all in the week the shipment has to leave. Committing capacity early is usually worth more than the rate saved by waiting.
